The World Trade Centre Amsterdam lies at the
heart of the Zuidas, which is evolving as the most vital business
community in the Netherlands. Its location at the Berlage Axis
allows the World Trade Centre to play a pioneering role in the
different upcoming projects in and around the Zuidas and also
those, which are in progress or have been completed. Among these
are the re-development and expansion of the World Trade Centre
Amsterdam, construction of the ING Headquarters, Maher 4 project
and a first class hotel as a physical end to the Berlage Axis.
Like the World Trade Centre Amsterdam some 300 World Trade
Centres are in operation throughout the world at this time and
their primary goal is to make international trade easier by
bringing together business agencies and providing them with
the services they need to be successful. Each World Trade Centre
becomes a branch office of all the others by becoming a member
of the World Trade Centre Association (WTCA). World Trade Centre
Amsterdam has been a member of WTCA since 1985.

History
In 1967, a plan was created to build a meeting place for
the international business community in Amsterdam. In 1979,
architect Gerard de Klerk was commissioned by Algemeen Burgerlijk
Pensioenfonds and Fries-Groningse Hypotheekbank to design
this World Trade Centre. In 1982, the then Prime Minister,
Mr. A.A.M. van Agt, laid the first stone.
Her Majesty, The Queen officially inaugurated the World Trade
Centre on October 25 1985 which soon came to be popularly
known as ‘The BlueAngel’, an imposing building
situated on the best possible location, a junction of roads,
air, rail and water ways.
In 1998 Kantoren Fonds Nederland and ING Real Estate commissioned
architects to draw up plans to create a new standard where
business can be conducted in a progressive atmosphere. The
architects of a London-based architectural firm Kohn Pederson
Fox in collaboration with the Amsterdam firm Van de Oever,
Zaaijer & Partners were asked to incorporate openness
and transparency that meet the demands of the present and
the future. This recent project of renovation and expansion
involved an expense of Euro 300 million.
